The Macon Rescue Mission had a very special gift today. Dylan Byrd made a generous contribution. Why was his donation so unique? Because on October 8th Dylan turned 11 years old—and he decided to donate his birthday money to the Mission.
To the surprise and delight of the Mission staff, Dylan personally delivered his gift on his day off from school. When asked why he chose to relinquish such a large sum, he shyly responded, “I like helping people…I want to help others that don’t have as much as me.” His mother, Rebecca Chitty, explained that Dylan always asks her if they can give money to homeless people they see in the community. Ms. Chitty is educating her sons on how the Macon Rescue Mission helps the homeless and taught them that by giving to this organization they can help the homeless, too. She gave him options of places to donate and Dylan chose the Mission. He told us, “I actually trust y’all…and my mom comes here…” Ms. Chitty helps with the Mission’s holiday meals for the homeless and donates to the Mission’s Bargain Center. The family plans to return to help serve the Thanksgiving meal this year.
