USGS Confirms Weak Earthquake near Sparta

Several Central Georgian's reported via social media Tuesday night, a rumbling and booming sound, mainly in areas northeast of Macon. It turns out, it was an earth shaking event!
The USGS confirmed overnight that a 2.7 magnitude earthquake originated near Sparta in Hancock county. The epicenter was located 16 miles from Milledgeville, 44 miles from Dublin, 45 miles from Macon and 90 miles from Atlanta.
The depth of the earthquake was just under 10 kilometers. It's likely that the deep nature of this earthquake, along with the weak magnitude, is the reason by a limited number of people feeling the earthquake.
No damage has been reported.
