Strong Quake Hits New Zealand; Injuries Reported

NewsCentral Staff

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - The mayor of a New Zealand city rattled by a strong earthquake says there are reports of serious injuries from the temblor.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says Tuesday's quake left people in the city council building injured, and he's heard reports of other serious injuries throughout the city.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor was centered 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city at a depth of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers).

Christchurch has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks since a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck on Sept. 4 last year, causing extensive damage and a handful of injuries, but no deaths.
