A winter storm is making its way up the East Coast.

Icy roads are blamed for at least one fatal accident today in the South. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a man was killed in a collision between a pickup truck and a car on a road near Fayetteville.

Treacherous conditions prompted road closures around Atlanta and other parts of north Georgia. Schools in the region, as well as in Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri and the Carolinas, either closed for the day or opened late.

As the storm moves into the Mid-Atlantic, schools have been closing early.

In Virginia, Appalachian Power says more than 18,000 customers have lost power in the southwestern part of the state.

Forecasters say the Washington, D.C. area could get as much as three inches. Authorities at Reagan National Airport temporarily shut down the runway to clear snow. And state police in New York say weather-related accidents shut down Interstate 81 northbound in the Syracuse area for more than two hours.
