Severe Weather Prompts Numerous Tornado Warnings Wednesday

Severe weather struck central Georgia hard Wednesday afternoon, prompting several tornado warnings across the region.

One of the first damage reports this afternoon was out of Monroe county, where numerous trees were downed in between Forsyth and Johnstonville.

Trees have also been reported downed along I-16 in Twiggs county in the Huber and Tarversville areas.

In Laurens county, several trees were downed in the northern part of the county.

In Wilkinson county, several trees were downed in the McIntyre and Irwinton areas.

Another hard hit area is Washington county. Two tornado warnings were issued for the Sandersville area. Reports of numerous trees and power lines down in Washington county have been received.

Another strong storm blew through Johnson county, damaging several homes and downing trees. There are reports that a tree fell onto a home in Johnson county off Highway 57, about 3 miles west of Wrightsville. No injuries have been reported. Large hail was also reported in the Wrightsville area.

The severe weather also prompted the lockdown of Robins Air Force Base, the first of its kind in base history.

A bad traffic accident on I-75, involving an 18-wheeler, shut down the heavily traveled section of 75 during and after the severe weather. The accident occurred at exit 146 and resulted in severe delays. There has been no word of injuries at this time.
