Weather balloons are launched twice a day from 92 sites across the country. Locally, they are launched from Peachtree City. They are used to measure temperature, wind direction and humidity while climbing to over ten miles above the earth's surface.
Budget cuts could force the agency to reduce the number of daily balloon launches.
According to WGXA's Chief Meteorologist Jeff Cox, this data is used in making forecasts every day and helps in determining the threat of severe weather and winter weather among other things.
