New census data shows more central Georgian's are carpooling.

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2011 American Community Survey revealed that the percentage of commuters who carpool in the Macon area rose from 6.8% in 2010 to 11% in 2011. At the same time, the number of people who drove alone to work dropped from 88.1% to 83.4%.

The survey also revealed that the average travel time to get to work dropped by two minutes, going from 24.3 minutes in 2010 to 22.3 in 2011.

According to Chris Glazier for The Clean Air Campaign, "It’s not hard to understand why Macon residents are choosing carpooling to get to work: it can help save significantly on your transportation costs, in addition to helping keep the area’s streets clear and its air clean."
