Puppies stolen from family fleeing Hurricane Irene

Authorities say five puppies belonging to a Virginia family who fled Hurricane Irene have been stolen.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say five puppies belonging to a Virginia family who fled Hurricane Irene have been stolen.

Athens-Clarke County police said the family and their five pit bull puppies arrived in Athens around 2 a.m. Saturday to stay with Georgia relatives as the hurricane lashed Virginia and other states.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/qI80qc) that the puppies were in their relatives' fenced-in backyard, and everyone fell asleep around 5 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say that when they awoke around 9 a.m., the puppies were gone.

Police said no one found any holes in the fence.
