North Texas Storms Welcome during Wildfires

NewsCentral Staff

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Thousands of homes and businesses have lost electricity as North Texas thunderstorms brought some soggy relief from wildfires and lingering drought.

Dallas-based Oncor reported more than 5,600 homes and businesses were without power early Monday. The utility says the outages mainly were in the Fort Worth metro area.

A severe drought stemming from La Nina last fall has led to bone-dry conditions in most of Texas. More than 1 million acres have burned since the first full week of April.

Wildfires last week destroyed at least 160 homes and two churches in the Possum Kingdom Lake recreational area, about 70 miles west of Fort Worth.

Experts with the National Climatic Data Center and the National Weather Service planned a conference call Monday to discuss the drought and agriculture.
