A new tornado siren has been installed next to the Juliette fire station that boasts new technology which sounds an alarm heard a mile away with speakers that can also double as a PA system.
The train whistle won’t be the only distinct noise passing through downtown Juliette now, although the new sound is one nobody hopes to hear.
A new tornado siren has been installed next to the Juliette fire station that boasts new technology which sounds an alarm heard a mile away with speakers that can also double as a PA system.
Three others like it are being installed across Monroe County thanks to a FEMA grant to warn the public before tornadoes, like the ones seen during the outbreak last April.
Matthew Perry, EMA Director in Monroe County, told NewsCentral, “We had over 100 homes destroyed. We had 80 more that suffered moderate to major damage. We had two people killed in Barnesville from the storm that hit us. If you think for one minute that it can’t happen to you, then you're living under a rock."
The sirens are being targeted in popular outdoor areas like High Falls State Park.
Tests will continue in the upcoming weeks to have the new sirens fully operational by the end of January.
