People in middle Georgia are taking steps to fight Alzheimer’s Disease.
Hundreds of people, including a group from WGXA, walked to raise awareness and money to help fight Alzheimer’s Saturday morning.
The event, which took place at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, netted 137 - thousand dollars for the middle Georgia chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, which serves 26 counties in the region.
Association Board Member and WGXA’s Chief Meteorologist Jeff Cox says the event is a great way to raise awareness about an important issue.
Jeff told WGXA’s Shonti Tager before the walk Saturday that Alzheimer’s is now "the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. New cases are diagnosed every 69 seconds, and so we're working to end Alzheimer’s and bring awareness to the disease, but also to support those dealing with the disease and help the caregivers as well.”
The Walk to END Alzheimer’s is just one event in a yearlong series to raise money and awareness about the disease across central Georgia.
WGXA continued it’s involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association by sponsoring the 2012 Walk to END Alzheimer’s and featured a large group of station employees and personalities in Saturday’s walk.
