All residents of North Carolina's Hatteras Island are now being allowed to return, thanks to progress made in restoring services and infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Irene.
RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) - All residents of North Carolina's Hatteras Island are now being allowed to return, thanks to progress made in restoring services and infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Irene.
Dare County emergency management officials had previously announced that residents of three less-damaged villages were going to be allowed back. But now they say residents of all seven villages on the island can go home today.
Visitors aren't expected to be allowed back until Sept. 17 at the earliest.
The island lost parts of its main road during the hurricane, which made landfall Aug. 27 near Cape Lookout.
