Emergency officials on the Georgia coast are keeping an eye on Hurricane Sandy, but they say the storm is having little impact here as it passes far away at sea.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Emergency officials on the Georgia coast are keeping an eye on Hurricane Sandy, but they say the storm is having little impact here as it passes far away at sea.
In Glynn County, where thousands of University of Georgia football fans are staying on St. Simons Island this weekend for the Georgia-Florida football game Saturday, emergency management director Jay Wiggins says no beach rescues have been necessary. He was initially worried about dangerous rip currents, but says cool temperatures have kept visitors out of the water.
Chatham County emergency management spokeswoman Kelly Harley says overcast skies and a constant breeze were the only sign Saturday that a hurricane was passing offshore.
Sandy stayed more than 300 miles off the Georgia coast as the storm moved northward Saturday.
