Georgia beaches may get a last-minute tourism boost from Labor Day weekend travelers who are rerouting their vacation plans to avoid stormy weather forecast along the Gulf of Mexico.
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Georgia beaches may get a last-minute tourism boost from Labor Day weekend travelers who are rerouting their vacation plans to avoid stormy weather forecast along the Gulf of Mexico.
Vicky Buck of the Tybee Island Tourism Council said Friday the visitor center at Georgia's largest public beach is getting a few calls from people asking if the island still has rooms available and what the weather is expected to look like over the holiday weekend.
A tropical depression in the Gulf is forecast to bring up to 20 inches of rain to coastal areas spanning Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
The Georgia coast saw extra tourists last spring and summer because of the Gulf oil spill. Buck says the peak tourist season has ended because school in Georgia started last month.
