Authorities say a wildfire burning in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National forest is nearly contained.
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a wildfire burning in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National forest is nearly contained.
The Gainesville Times on Wednesday reported the 215-acre fire burning near the Black and Springer mountains in northern Georgia is about 85 percent contained.
Officials with the U.S. Forest Service expect the fire to be fully contained by Thursday.
Authorities closed the approach to the Appalachian Trail and diverted hikers around the dangerous areas. If the fire is contained Thursday, forest service officials say trail and road closures in the area may be lifted as soon as Friday.
The blaze was first reported Saturday evening, and no structures have been damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Black and Springer mountains are about 40 miles northwest of Gainesville.
