Georgia transportation officials are applauding their department's response to last week's winter storm but also say there's room for improvement.
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia transportation officials are applauding their department's response to last week's winter storm but also say there's room for improvement.
Georgia Department of Transportation board chairman Randy Bowen said Wednesday 2,000 employees worked 12-hour shifts around the
clock for six days.
GDOT commissioner Vance Smith says the department spent more than $5.5 million clearing some 15,000 miles of federal and state
highways.
Bowen acknowledged that some things didn't go as well as he would have liked.
Some possible improvements they mentioned include: increasing the use of private contractors, staggering shift changes, adding stockpiles of salt and gravel at strategic locations and enhancing planning and coordination with local governments.
