FEMA chief says economy adds to storm challenges

NewsCentral Staff

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate says local emergency management officials will be challenged to educate thousands of newly elected public officials this hurricane season on balancing the necessity of protecting the public against the uncertainty of storms that could impact their economies.

Fugate said Tuesday that governors, mayors and others must participate in hurricane preparedness drills to understand the decisions they could have to make this summer. Fugate is among a host of speakers at the National Hurricane Conference happening this week in Atlanta.

Fugate also says the emergency management community should take advantage of social media to engage the public and work more with the private sector to fill in the gaps in support when responding
to disasters.
