Every day, 118 people are diagnosed with leukemia, which means that in every hour of the day at least four people could be learning they have the disease. NewsCentral’s Michelle Quesada has been touched by these statistics with her sister’s diagnosis and she is raising awareness and funds with a bowling for leukemia event.

The Central Georgia Community has been so supportive after learning in recent stories that my sister is battling two types of leukemia. Many of you have wanted to help and now you can. A Bowling for Leukemia event at Gold Cup Bowling Center on Pio Nono Avenue will help raise awareness and funds for leukemia and support for my sister.

"Leukemia is another one of those cancers that doesn't really get the attention people think that it gets,” says Marc Childs, co-organizer of the event.

The Bowling for Leukemia event is for all ages. Teams of six get to bowl in a tournament and support a great cause and my sister Elizabeth Quesada at the same time.

"She's another fighter for leukemia, for cancer, and whether you've met her or like me, I've never met her before, but I feel like it’s important to support friends and family that have their family that's going through this type of thing and you know Michelle Quesada is one of those people. This is her sister and to reach out to someone that you don't know and to help someone that you don't know is a very selfless act,” says Childs.

My sister just finished another round of chemotherapy after relapsing last month and is waiting to receive the bone marrow biopsy results to find out if she is back in remission. A bone marrow transplant is her only option right now, but she hasn't found a match. The national bone marrow registry will also be registering potential donors at the event, so even if you can't bowl, you can still help.

"Without awareness you're not going to have the funds and without the funds you are not going to have the research and without the research, you won't have the cure. So each little piece of the puzzle is so very important,” says Ellie Williams with the Perry Exchange Club, co-organizer of the event.

The Bowling for Leukemia event will take place Saturday, April 7th from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gold Cup Bowling Center on Pio Nono Avenue. Three tournaments will take place; from 1 to 3, 3 to 5, and 5 to 7.

To sign up e-mail Michelle Quesada at MQuesada87@gmail.com or sign up at the event.

There’s a maximum of six to team. It costs $120 to bowl and that includes two hours of bowling, shoe rentals, a pizza, a pitcher of a soft drink.
