New York City is digging itself out after taking the brunt of a winter storm that's been moving up the East Coast.
Commuters waded through knee-high snow on sidewalks and unplowed roads this morning. Cars stalled repeatedly on snow-filled streets, including two city buses on a side street in Brooklyn.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says cars left behind, along with snow that was falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches an hour, have slowed efforts to clear the streets.
Sanitation Commissioner John Dougherty said it would take at least 24 hours to open up all the roads.
Throughout the Northeast, it's been a case of travelers not getting anywhere in the air or on the ground, thanks to snow that's piled up more than two feet in some areas.
States of emergency are in effect in states including North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Maine and Massachusetts.
