2011 will be remembered for all types of weather - snow, severe weather, tornadoes, heat and drought! Chief Meteorologist Jeff Cox brings us his 2011 Weather Year in Review.
January 9th and 10th saw a winter storm wallop the Peach State. It was a mix of rain, sleet and snow across central Georgia. Ice accumulations of a tenth to a half inch were reported across the region.
By March, we shifted our attention to severe weather. A tornado tracked across Laurens county on March 26th with winds up to 90 mph. Hundreds of trees were downed...30 structures damaged. A second tornado touched down near the Sumter-Crisp county line over Lake Blackshear with winds up to 80 mph. Straight line winds of 75 mph damaged the roof of a Days Inn Motel in Peach county.
Just a few days later, a fatal tornado touched down in Dodge county the morning of April 5th. Winds topped 130 mph. One fatality and two injuries occurred. Another tornado touched down in southern Bibb county with winds reaching 105 mph. Damage was extensive in the Sardis Church Road area.
A second tornado struck Bibb county on the morning of April 16th with winds up to 110 mph. 25 homes sustained damage...4 of which were destroyed.
The outbreak we'll all remember - April 27th and 28th. In total, 353 tornadoes were confirmed in 21 states. In Georgia, 15 tornadoes claimed 14 lives. An EF-3 twister tracked across Pike, Lamar, Monroe and Butts counties, killing 2 and injuring 22. A second tornado later that night touched down in Putnam and Hancock counties.
2011 will also be remembered for temperature extremes. January was the coldest January in Macon since 1985. After warming up over the next 4 months, June became 2nd hottest June in Macon history and the hottest June since 1952. July tied for the 9th hottest July...August tied for the 3rd hottest August. Overall, this summer will go down as the 2nd hottest summer in Macon history, missing the hottest summer of 1954 by one tenth of a degree. Overall, 2011 is on track to be the 4th warmest year in Macon history and the warmest since 1990.
Drought was also a common word in 2011. The coverage of the drought didn't change over the course of the year, but the severity did. Last year, 6% of Georgia was in an extreme drought. This year, that number is up to 59%. 2011 is on track to be the 2nd driest year in Macon history - the driest since 1954!
