5 NYC-area airports to close to arriving flights

Aviation officials say they'll close the five main New York City-area airports to arriving passenger flights beginning at noon on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Aviation officials say they'll close the five main New York City-area airports to arriving passenger flights beginning at noon on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the airports and says many weekend departures have been canceled in anticipation of the hurricane.

The suspension affects John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia, Stewart International and Teterboro airports. It applies to domestic and international flights.

The Port Authority said Friday it was taking the action to avoid stranding passengers at the airports when the region's mass transit systems won't be running because of the hurricane threat.
