The State Department has also issued a global travel warning to Americans. It says the potential for terrorism is particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula. Top U.S. national security officials held a meeting Saturday to assess the situation, and the White House says the president is receiving frequent briefings.
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Officials say all three people aboard a private twin-engine aircraft that crashed in coastal South Carolina are dead. The plane went down Saturday afternoon in Conway about 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. The local coroner says the plane apparently struck a power line while attempting to return to the airport, cutting electricity to the area.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say a driver who ran into a crowd at the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles fled from the scene and has not been found. Police are looking for a dark-colored Dodge Charger or Avenger. The driver was a man described as having sandy blond hair and estimated to be in his mid-20s. The incident left 12 people injured -- two of them critically.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Rescue crews on Mount Hood have halted the search for a snowboarder buried under a collapsed ice tunnel until daylight. The collapse of the tunnel on Saturday afternoon trapped one snowboarder. Five others traveling with him were uninjured and called police. They attempted to dig the man out, but were unable to break through thick snow and ice.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There are a lot of people hoping to strike it rich quick. And many of them bought $2 tickets to play Powerball for a jackpot estimated to be at least $300 million. The winning numbers for Saturday's drawing were 21, 24, 36, 42, and 45, with the Powerball 15.
