DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The Syrian government is calling allegations that it has used chemical weapons against civilians "absolutely baseless" and has agreed to allow U.N. experts to investigate last week's purported attack on rebel-held areas outside Damascus. A senior White House official says the U.S. has "very little doubt" Syrian forces used such weapons.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq is reeling from a dramatic uptick in violence over the past few months. Insurgents who want to destabilize the government are carrying out numerous attacks in Iraq, striking targets as varied as a coffee shop, a wedding party convoy and a carload of off-duty soldiers. At least 46 people died on Sunday. The latest wave of killing is Iraq's worst spate of bloodshed since 2008.
GROVELAND, Calif. (AP) — The Rim Fire which is raging in the remote wilderness area of Yosemite is testing the metal of hundreds of firefighters who are trying to protect both property and picturesque forests. There's also growing concern people as far away as 150 miles could be affected. Ashes are falling on a reservoir that supplies San Francisco but officials say the water is still good. Also ,the city's hydroelectric power generated by the system has been interrupted by the 209-square-mile blaze
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — As the Labor Day weekend approaches, there's some good news for the record number of people who are expected to hit the road. The average price of gasoline has fallen 4 cents a gallon over the past two weeks and 20 cents since this time last year. The Lundberg Survey of gas prices reports that nationwide, a gallon of regular now costs $3.56.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The panda cub at the National Zoo in Washington appears to be in excellent health after a quick physical exam. Zookeepers got their hands on the panda this morning for the first time since it was born Friday afternoon. The Zoo says the cub is healthy, vibrant and weighs 4.8 ounces. Veterinarians say its heartbeat is steady and its lungs appear to be functioning properly.
