The House has narrowly defeated a proposal that would have blocked the National Security Agency's secret collection of hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records. Backing the NSA program were 134 Republicans and 83 Democrats, including House Speaker John Boehner, who typically does not vote, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — U.S., Chinese and North Korean war veterans have joined leader Kim Jong Un at an event marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Kim and top military officials laid a wreath at a memorial to war veterans at a new cemetery in Pyongyang's outskirts. The three-year conflict ended in a truce on July 27, 1953, but is still called "Victory Day" in North Korea.
MADRID (AP) — The derailment of a passenger train in northwestern Spain has killed at least 40 people and injured at least 140. Officials have given differing death tolls and the cause is unclear, but the disaster happened in an area where the rail way is curved. One train car was severed in two, another wound up pointing upward. The victims included people planning to attend a religious festival in Santiago de Compostela, which draws thousands from around the world.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The victims of the Asiana Airlines crash have been remembered with a memorial service south of San Francisco. Mayor Ed Lee was among those who attended a private a private service in Colma for the three Chinese girls who died. They were killed when a Boeing 777 crash-landed after approaching a San Francisco International Airport runway too low and too slow on July 6.
MIAMI (AP) — A tropical storm has popped up in the Atlantic. It's about 600 miles west of the Cape Verde Island off the coast of west Africa. Forecasters say Tropical Storm Dorian has sustained winds near 50 mph. There are no land threats, and little change in strength is expected over the next two days as it heads west.
