With commercial armed robberies on the rise in Macon and Bibb County, some convenience store and gas station workers are worried about their safety.
This week, a number of convenience stores, gas stations and even a local sex novelty shop have been robbed at gunpoint.
Amanda Josey works at a Marathon gast station. While she's never been the target of robbers, the store has. But new security precautions have been put in place.
"We always have two people working, and the bullet-proof glass helps out," she said. A door that leads behind the counter is kept locked.
"We also have a sign on the door that says there's a gun on premises," she said.
Within the last month, the Macon area has had a number of businesses targeted.
Two Family Dollar stores in the city of Macon have been targeted, along with more than 5 businesses in the county, including gas stations, hotels and a sex novelty shop.
"I've been here long enough, every time the economy goes bad, ... everybody steals stuff to sell, pawn, swap when the economy is down," said Capt. Mike Smallwood, Bibb County Sheriff's office.
Employees at the X-Mart weren't allowed to talk with a WGXA reporter. And the same story at the Family Dollar on Houston Avenue, where a store clerk had a gun pointed at her head last week as the gunman demanded money.
