A man, who was sentenced Wednesday morning in the Monroe County Courthouse, escaped the courthouse, led police on a chase and was able to crash one squad car into another before being recaptured.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that Jeffrey Keith Sligh, 36, had driven his own vehicle to the courthouse where he was on trial for charges of burglary and arson.
After being found guilty of burglary, Sligh was sentenced to 20 years in confinement. Deputies were in the process of taking Sligh into custody when he escaped the courthouse, got into his truck and attempted to drive away.
While trying to drive away from deputies, he was involved in an accident.
With deputies ordering him to stop, Sligh stole a Monroe County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle, and drove away with deputies in pursuit.
Deputies ultimately apprehended him at the Georgia Highway 83 ramp to I-75 North (Exit 187). Gunshots were fired during the incident, however no one was injured.
Sligh is being held in the Monroe County jail.
No further information is being released as this is an active investigation.
