HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — Police are trying to understand what motivated a man with no criminal record to go on a shooting rampage Friday night in an apartment building in South Florida. He lived there with his mother. The gunman set his apartment on fire and then killed six people before being shot to death by a police after taking two people hostage. The captives were not hurt.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities don't know if a church-owned bus was experiencing mechanical problems when it crashed into a retaining wall along an Indianapolis roadway Saturday. It hit the wall at a high rate of speed as it came off an Interstate and overturned. The bus was carrying 37 passengers, many of them teenagers, who were coming home from a youth camp. Three people, including a husband and wife, were killed and 26 others were injured.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal authorities say a rig is being positioned to drill a relief well for a gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico, and a permit to do so is in the final stages of review. The relief well could intercept the leaking well and seal it with drilling mud and cement. The leak is from a gas rig that blew wild Tuesday morning. Spewing gas ignited that night, burning the rig.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Roads are under water and homes are inundated in parts of several western North Carolina counties after a series of thunderstorms Saturday dumped heavy rains on the region. No injuries have been reported. It's at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Congresswoman Lindy Boggs has died. She was 97. President Barack Obama praised her as a champion of civil rights and women's rights. He says her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Boggs represented her Louisiana district for nearly 18 years. She was first elected in 1973 to finish the term of her late husband who died in a plane crash.
