WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is urging Americans to take time from their "hurried lives" to listen to the heroic stories of Korean War veterans who deserved a better homecoming when they returned to a country weary of war. Obama told some of their stories today as he spoke at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall. It was 60 years ago today that the armistice was signed ending the hostilities that left at least 2.5 million people dead. A formal peace treaty was never signed.
BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian state media say government forces have captured a historic mosque that has been under rebel control for more than a year in the central city of Homs (hohms). State TV quotes an unnamed military official as saying that troops took control of the 13th-century mosque today. The mosque is famous for its nine domes and two minarets and has been a symbol for rebels in the city that is known as "the capital of the revolution."
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The Army psychiatrist charged in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting says the U.S. government is at war with Islam. In a lengthy statement released to Fox News, Maj. Nidal Hasan also says he regrets serving in the U.S. Army. Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the November 2009 attack at the Texas Army post. His trial is scheduled to start Aug. 6.
HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — Police are still trying to determine a motive and identify the victims of a shooting rampage in the Miami suburb of Hialeah. Police say a gunman killed six people and took two others hostage in an apartment building before being shot to death by a SWAT team early today. Neighbors say the gunman lived in the building, but police wouldn't confirm that.
UNDATED (AP) — The influential musician known as the architect of the Tulsa Sound has died. JJ Cale wrote "After Midnight" for Eric Clapton and "Call Me the Breeze" for Lynyrd Skynyrd. His manager says Cale died of a heart attack yesterday at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. He was 74.
