Michelle Nunn brought her campaign for the U.S. Senate to Macon Thursday.
Nunn, 46, a Democrat, is the CEO of Points of Light, a national nonprofit organization that encourages volunteerism. She is also the daughter of former senator Sam Nunn, a Democrat who served Georgia in the Senate for four terms.
Nunn faces challenges in her effort to gain the seat of retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Republicans have dominated state politics in recent years, and Georgia has had only one woman serve in the Senate.
Rebecca Latimer Felton, 87, a Democrat, was appointed to fill the seat vacated by the death of Thomas E. Watson, who dies in office. She served one day, sworn in on Nov. 21, 1922, and resigning on Nov. 22, 1922. Her appointment made her the first woman U.S. Senator.
