MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A public defender representing the man accused of fatally shooting a baby in a stroller in coastal Georgia attacked the credibility of the child's mother during cross examination.
Kevin Gough repeatedly asked Sherry West on Tuesday how she could be certain it was De'Marquise (deh-mahr-KEES') Elkins who shot the baby. He also raised questions about her interview with police that seemed to indicate she had expressed uncertainty about the shooter's identity.
West had earlier testified through tears that two teenagers had tried to rob her in Brunswick on March 21 and that one of them shot her 13-month-old son Antonio Santiago in the head.
Gough's cross examination of West began shortly after 2 p.m. and he suggested it could last into the evening.
Elkins is charged with murder.
