The Public Safety Committtee of Macon City Council discussed this issue for well over an hour and a half with no real resolution.
In the wake of the fatal shooting of a teenager at the Zodiac Lounge in Macon, the city administration is asking the Council's Public Safety Committee to make some changes to the city code.
Under the current law, businesses selling alcohol by the drink must stop pouring at 2am.....patrons have until 3am to consume or dispose of their drinks. Authorities say some clubs are allowing people to stay as late as 5am which can lead to fights among the crowds.....the proposed solution is an a ordinance that would require all customers to leave the businesses at 3am...But some on the committee say that if the current laws were enforced, there wouldn't be an issue.
"The alcohol on the tables being consumed after 3:00 That's a no no. And those are people that are circumventing the rules." -Henry Gibson.
After much discussion on the topic the committee voted to table the issue, both to clarify some legal questions, and to invite some of the local club owners to the table for their opinion.
"I would like to see people that are involved and get their take on things which would help us come to a decision that everybody can live with."
The issue will be taken up again at the next meeting of the Public Safety Committee in Two Weeks.
Barring any rescheduling, that meeting should take place Monday September 23rd at 4:00pm in the city council chambers. Chace Ambrose WGXA
