Heyward saves Braves win with diving catch in 9th
NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Heyward made a diving catch with runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth inning after pinch-hitter Reed Johnson hit a go-ahead single with two outs in a two-run top half, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1, comeback victory over the New York Mets on Monday night.
Playing for the first time after missing six games with a strained right hamstring, Heyward made a long run to his right and slid along the wet grass to hold his glove up after grabbing pinch-hitter Justin Turner's fly ball.
The Braves took advantage of catcher John Buck's passed ball to score twice in the ninth against closer Bobby Parnell.
The Braves did not get their first hit off Dillon Gee until Freddie Freeman led off the seventh with a single. But the NL East leaders ended their two-game skid against Parnell (5-5).
Clemson, Miami picked as favorites in ACC
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Clemson and Miami are the preseason favorites to win their respective divisions in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd is an overwhelming selection as its preseason player of the year.
The league announced its predicted order of finish Monday following a vote of 120 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
The Tigers received 102 first-place votes in the Atlantic Division, well ahead of the 18 reigning league champion Florida State got.
Miami had 65 first-place votes in the Coastal, ahead of Virginia Tech's 27 and North Carolina's 22.
Clemson then received 95 votes as the eventual ACC champion.
Boyd was the ACC player of the year in 2012 after breaking his league records with 36 touchdown passes and 46 TDs responsible for. He received 105 votes.
Eastern Illinois ready to defend OVC title
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Eastern Illinois coach Dino Babers knows he has a talented team as the preseason favorite to repeat as the Ohio Valley Conference champions. A schedule packed with the toughest non-conference slate in his school's history has him worried.
His Panthers will be on the road for three of their first four games, including the season-opener at San Diego State. Babers said Monday they are just going to try to survive that stretch.
Eastern Illinois is expected to very well in the OVC, receiving 12 of 18 first-place votes and 122 points in the 2013 poll released Monday at the league's media day as voted on by its coaches and sports information directors. The Panthers won last year's OVC title after being picked to finish eighth in the nine-team league.
NORTH CAROLINA-HAIRSTON ARREST
Charges dismissed against Tar Heels' Hairston
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have dismissed charges against North Carolina basketball leading scorer P.J. Hairston from a traffic stop last month.
Hairston was arrested June 5 and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license at a checkpoint in Durham. But the Durham County clerk of court's office said Monday those charges were dismissed Friday after Hairston produced proof he had a driver's license and had completed a drug assessment program.
Two passengers — Elizabeth City State player Miykael Faulcon and former college basketball player Carlos Sanford — were also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. Their cases are pending with an Aug. 6 court date.
That traffic stop was the second time in a month that Hairston had been cited while driving a rental vehicle linked to a convicted felon.
