TY COBB BAT-AUCTION
Ty Cobb bat given to Detroiter fails to sell
DETROIT (AP) — A baseball bat given by Tigers legend Ty Cobb to Detroit's postmaster has failed to sell at auction.
Hunt Auctions says bids this week in New York failed to meet the reserve price for the century-old, 34.5-inch bat used by "The Georgia Peach."
It belonged to William Nagel's great-grandson, Duffy Ross. Nagel was a friend of Cobb's who also sometimes threw batting practice to the Hall of Famer.
The estimated price range for the bat was $75,000 to $125,000.
Malzahn's Priority No. 1: Finding his quarterback
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Auburn coach Gus Malzahn's first priority is finding a starting quarterback.
The Tigers will have four contenders going into preseason camp, and Malzahn says the quarterback question is "probably what gives me the most stress right now."
Junior college transfer Nick Marshall and freshman Jeremy Johnson will join past starters Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace when camp opens on Aug. 2.
That position was one of the areas where the Tigers struggled while going 3-9 last season. Now, Malzahn is seeking the right man to run his fast-paced offense in his first season as head coach.
He said Wednesday at SEC media days that Auburn has plenty of question marks going into this season "but that is the most important one."
