ATLANTA (AP) — Federal fisheries officials have denied an application from the Georgia Aquarium to import beluga whales from Russia. The aquarium applied last year to import 18 whales as part of an initiative aimed at improving the genetic diversity of belugas living in American captivity.
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — The prosecution will resume presenting witnesses today in the trial of Andrea Sneiderman. Her husband was killed in 2010 outside a suburban Atlanta preschool. Prosecutors initially said she arranged the killing, but murder charges against her were dropped. She now faces charges of making false statements, hindering an investigation and perjury.
ATLANTA (AP) — A Stone Mountain man accused in a series of eight armed robberies has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. Federal prosecutors say 24-year-old LaQuan Smith was on parole for armed robbery when he committed a series of armed robberies during a three-week period in December 2011.
JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Jury selection is expected to resume today in the trial of Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill. Hill was elected last year despite being under indictment on felony corruption charges. The indictment accuses Hill of using his office for personal gain. Defense attorneys maintain the accusations are attacks by political rivals.
