FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) — A former publisher of the Fort Payne Times-Journal has died at the age of 76.
The Times-Journal reported Tuesday that (http://bit.ly/1eK92pt) Ben M. Smith died after a long, unspecified illness. Smith was the paper's publisher from July 1963 to 1970.
Southern Newspapers Inc. CEO Lissa Walls Vahldiek told the newspaper that Smith "was a talented newspaperman, a shrewd businessman, a mentor to many and, above all, a man who loved his family."
Smith began his career in Cedartown, Ga. at a paper owned by Vahldiek's father, Carmage Walls. He served as Walls Newspapers Inc. vice president after leaving the Times-Journal.
Smith is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Phillip, David, Tim and Greg, his brother Taylor, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
