IDYLLWILD, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of wildfire evacuees are being allowed to return to their homes in Southern California. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department has lifted evacuation orders for Idyllwild, Fern Valley and Pine Cove. That's after heavy rain helped firefighters make substantial progress against a wildfire that has burned across 42 square miles and destroyed seven homes.
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Two activist groups say Syrian troops fired mortar rounds that slammed into a main market in a town in northern Syria today, killing at least 18 civilians. The town is held mostly by opposition fighters. Also today, state media said government forces killed dozens of rebels in an ambush near Damascus.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Bombings and shootings in Iraq have killed 13 people today, the day after a bloody wave of car bombings and other attacks left more than 70 dead. More than 450 people have been killed in Iraq so far this month, including at least 284 since Ramadan began on July 10, according to an Associated Press count.
NEW YORK (AP) — Five New York City mayoral candidates have spent the night in a public housing complex to get a firsthand look at mold and other problems there. Democrats Bill de Blasio (BLAH'-zee-oh), John Liu (LOO), Christine Quinn, Bill Thompson and Anthony Weiner spent last night with different host families at the Lincoln Houses complex. About 3,100 residents live in the 65-year-old complex.
PARIS (AP) — Chris Froome has won the 100th Tour de France. It's the second year in a row a British cyclist has won the prestigious race. Last year's winner was Bradley Wiggins. Froome took the yellow race leader's jersey in Stage 8 and never relinquished it. He made his ceremonial ride to victory today in Paris.
