WASHINGTON (AP) — Many economists are expecting a government report out today to show that the U.S. economy barely grew the second quarter of this year. Experts surveyed by FactSet believe that growth slowed to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of just 1 percent from April through June. Growth was a sluggish 1.8 percent during the quarter before.
BRUSSELS (AP) — The jobless rate in the eurozone is down for the first time in 2 years. The EU's statistics office says in the 17 countries that use the euro, unemployment was 19.27 million in June, down from 19.29 million the previous month. The decline is minimal, but it's another sign that the recession in the eurozone may have ended.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.N. mission in Afghanistan says the number of civilian casualties has spiked in the first half of this year as insurgents use the NATO drawdown to try to retake lost territory. The U.N. says there was a 23 percent increase in the number of Afghans killed or wounded. And for the first time, there's a breakdown of the number of casualties from January to June, with 1,319 civilians killed and 2,533 wounded.
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Psychiatric officials in Sweden are evaluating whether a man once considered the country's worst serial killer can be released from the secure mental health unit where he's been held since 1991. Sixty-three-year-old Sture Bergwall had confessed to more than 30 murders over three decades and was convicted of eight of them. Those convictions were overturned after Bergwall withdrew his confessions, and prosecutors say now they don't have enough evidence to retry him.
DENVER (AP) — A Colorado hotel is offering a one-night stay in a special room, just in case you happen to pop up in Denver. It's an inflatable room that rises 22 feet in the air. And the cost to spend one night is $50,000. Architect Alex Schweder created the 5-foot-by-7-foot, see-through room for a city arts festival. It has a chemical toilet, shower, sink, inflatable bed, couch and curtains, and it sits on a scissor lift on top of a van. There's a weight limit of 450 pounds and no smoking is allowed.
