Beijing says four of its ships "sternly declared" China's sovereignty over the islands. The uninhabited archipelago is controlled by Tokyo but also claimed by Beijing. Chinese ships have maintained a steady presence in the area since tensions spiked in September.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Pope Francis' rebel side has been on display in Brazil. He urged young Catholics Thursday to shake up the church and make a "mess" in their dioceses by going out into the streets to spread the faith. Francis put his message into practice by visiting one of Rio's most violent slums before opening the church's World Youth Day on a rain-soaked Copacabana Beach.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new ad will be airing on cable TV starting Friday promoting President Barack Obama's economic agenda. It's from Organizing for Action, a group that was formed out of Obama's re-election campaign. The spot features clips from Obama's economic speech this week in Illinois, in which the president says the country needs a long-term plan including a higher minimum wage, better access to pre-school and education, and less economic inequality.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Seven women have come forward accusing San Diego's mayor of making unwanted sexual advances toward them. That's prompted Mayor Bob Filner's own political party to call for his resignation. The San Diego County Democratic Party Central Committee voted 34-6 Thursday night to ask Filner to step down.
DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — The former police officer who pepper-sprayed students during an Occupy protest at the University of California, Davis is appealing for worker's compensation. John Pike claims he suffered psychiatric injury from the 2011 incident. Pike was fired after he was seen in videos casually spraying the faces of nonviolent protesters. Pike received scores of threats after hackers posted Pike's information online.
