WASHINGTON (AP) — The Navy has sent a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf region. Officials say the USS Harry S Truman has arrived in the Arabian Sea. It was scheduled to take the place of the USS Nimitz, which was supposed to head home. The Navy has ordered the Nimitz, which is in the Indian Ocean, to stay for now.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A rare military death sentence has been reached at Fort Hood. That's the penalty for Maj. Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood that left 13 dead. The American-born Muslim of Palestinian descent acted as his own attorney and never denied his actions at the huge Texas Army post.
GROVELAND, Calif. (AP) — Crews battling the massive wildfire in and around the Yosemite National Park have achieved 30 percent containment. The Rim Fire has been burning for 12 days and has scorched 301 square miles of rugged forest. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds are aiding firefighters.
