CLEVELAND (AP) — The three women raped and held captive for a decade in Cleveland won't have to face their tormentor in court. Ariel Castro has pleaded guilty to hundreds of counts to avoid the death penalty. Castro told the judge he was addicted to pornography, had a "sexual problem" and had been a sexual abuse victim himself long ago. The 53-year-old Castro said he understood that he would never get out of prison. He'll be sentenced next month.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Mayor Bob Filner says he will undergo two weeks of counseling after a series of women came forward and claimed he made unwanted sexual advances. They say Filner engaged in groping, kissing and offensive comments. But Filner, who is 70, made no mention of resigning in a statement to media. The so-called "intensive therapy" will begin Aug. 5.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the U.S. intends to transfer two additional detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Algeria. It's part of the administration's effort to close the military prison in Cuba. A White House spokesman says the administration wants Congress to support those efforts, by lifting restrictions on who can be transferred back to their home countries.
MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Dorian is becoming less organized as it moves across the Atlantic, far from land. The storm's maximum sustained winds late Friday are near 40 mph and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to become a remnant low in a day or so. Dorian is centered about 1,585 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving west-northwest near 22 mph.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators say they have certified two types of unmanned aircraft for civilian use. The Federal Aviation Administration says the drones are Insitu's Scan Eagle X200 and AeroVironment's PUMA. Both weigh less than 55 pounds, are about 4.5 feet long and have wingspans of 9 to 10 feet. A major energy company plans to fly the Scan Eagle off the Alaska coast starting in August to survey ice floes and migrating whales. The PUMA is expected to support emergency response crews for oil spill monitoring and wildlife surveillance over the Beaufort Sea.
