Four men broke into the Bass Pro Shop Sunday night and stole 17 AR-15 rifles, the Bibb Sheriff's Office reported.
The burglary at the north Bibb County store happened around 11:41 p.m. when the men broke through a glass door and entered the building.
Surveillance showed the four men went to the area of the store where guns are sold and used a prybar to open the metal bars used to secure the guns.
The sheriff's office said their investigation showed 17 AR-15 rifles were stolen.
After first identifying the weapons as "assault rifles," the sheriff's department changed the description Tuesday morning, agreeing with numerous callers who said assault rifles would be fully automatic weapons and therefore not available for purchase in a sporting goods store.
The AR-15 is a lightweight, magazine-fed, semi-automatic rifle. The fully automatic version of the AR-15 cannot legally be sold for civilian use in the United States.
The sheriff's office reported that forensics investigators and criminal investigators were dispatched to process evidence to help identify the suspects involved.
The suspects are described as:
Suspect 1: A black male suspect wearing a black shirt and shorts. This suspect was also seen carrying a white t-shirt in his left hand.
Suspect 2: A black male with a white t-shirt wrapped around his head, wearing a black t-shirt and shorts. This suspect was wearing long pants underneath the shorts. He was also wearing white, mid cut tennis shoes with red trimming and red shoe laces.
Suspect 3: A black male suspect wearing a black shirt and dark pants. This suspect was also wearing light colored shoes.
Suspect 4: A black male suspect wearing a black short- sleeve shirt with a white long sleeve shirt under his t-shirt. This suspect was also wearing shorts.
