Woman gets 20 years for scamming senior citizens

NewsCentral Staff

ATLANTA (AP) - A woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for defrauding senior citizens out of thousands of dollars under the alias, "Georgia Powers."

The DeKalb County District Attorney's office says the 36-year-old Santee Roberts was sentenced on Friday. Roberts will also serve 23 years on probation following her prison term.

A jury found Roberts guilty of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, identity fraud, financial transaction fraud and elder exploitation.

Prosecutors say Robert identified herself as a Georgia Power representative to 86 DeKalb residents, with most of them being more than 65 years old. But Robert was never employed by Georgia Power.

DeKalb District Attorney Robert James says Roberts began targeting senior citizens after purchasing a cellphone and registering it under the alias "Georgia Powers."
