Staff shakeup announced at youth detention center

NewsCentral Staff

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice commissioner Avery Niles has announced Melvin Womble, assistant director of security at the youth detention center in Augusta, has been dismissed.

Womble was suspended with pay in December after a serious assault in the detention center that led to investigations into the facility's incident reporting standards. Officials say Womble was dismissed Monday because at the time of the assault, he was serving a yearlong probationary employment period after juvenile inmates escaped from the facility.

Niles announced James L. Reid, who has a law enforcement and military background, will serve as assistant director for security. Donnell Collins, who also has a law enforcement and military background, will serve as captain of corrections officers.

Niles says he plans to name a new director in early 2013.
