Police searching for Ga. man posing as attorney

NewsCentral Staff

ATLANTA (AP) - An arrest warrant has been issued for a man accused of posing as a lawyer and duping a couple out of more than $5,000.

Atlanta Police spokesman John Chafee says Virginia and Kerwin Davis visited a police station Feb. 5 to tell officers Arkeith Nelson was posing as a lawyer and handing out business cards at a child welfare office.

The couple said they met with Nelson about a child support issue and agreed to pay him $5,275. Chafee says Nelson agreed to represent Kerwin Davis in court and never showed up. Consequently, an arrest warrant was issued for Davis.

Chafee says the Georgia Bar Association has confirmed Nelson is not an attorney.

Police say Nelson is wanted on four counts of theft by deception and unauthorized practice of law.
