Police: GA woman says newborn's death an accident

NewsCentral Staff

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say the mother of a newborn killed in Athens told detectives she accidentally cut the infant's throat while she was trying to cut the umbilical cord.

That's according to search warrants recently filed in the case against 21-year-old Cassandra Norwood, who is being held without bond on a murder charge.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/T42Zo1 ) the search warrants also revealed Norwood hid her pregnancy from relatives and said she was suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding when she was taken to the hospital in early November.

Authorities say Norwood delivered the baby in a bedroom and left it wrapped in a blanket with a kitchen knife before she was hospitalized.

An after-hours call to the public defender's office, which is representing Norwood, was not immediately returned.
