SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Officials in Chatham County say they're working to clear a backlog of more than 10,000 outstanding warrants.
The Savannah Morning News reports as of Nov. 2, the county sheriff's department listed 10,272 outstanding warrants, some of which dated back to the 1990s.
The newspaper reports many warrants are issued for people who fail to appear in court, or violated their probation guidelines.
About 87 percent of felony warrants have been served, and officials note a 73 percent clearance rate.
Authorities say the city of Savannah and certain county programs lose money because court fines and other penalties are usually attached to outstanding warrants.
Officials check the county's warrant list during traffic stops, jail visits and license renewals.
