Ga. inmate escapes using stolen ID to fool guards

NewsCentral Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in Savannah say an inmate escaped from jail by fooling guards into believing he was another prisoner due to be released.

Chatham County sheriff's deputies were still searching Friday for 30-year-old Ricardo Sean Chambers. Sheriff's officials say Chambers scammed his way through normal discharge procedures at the county jail late Thursday by using an identification bracelet taken from a fellow inmate.

Chambers was being held on charges of drug possession and theft by receiving stolen property. The sheriff's internal affairs division is investigating the escape.

Authorities say they believe the inmate whose ID wristband was used in the escape wasn't involved in helping Chambers. That inmate, who had been jailed on misdemeanor charges, was released Friday afternoon.
