Ga. attorney charged with theft of diamond ring

NewsCentral Staff

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - An Augusta lawyer has been charged with theft for not returning a diamond ring authorities say she found in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

A woman reported the ring missing Feb. 12 and said it was worth about $10,500. Alexia Dawn Davis, a public defender, found the ring Feb. 7 and returned it Feb. 19 after surveillance footage of the parking lot was broadcast.

Davis was charged with theft of lost or mislaid property - a felony because the ring is worth more than $1,500. Paula Frederick, general counsel for the Georgia Bar Association, told the Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/Xfc2nq) if Davis is convicted, she could be disbarred.

Her attorney, Tanya Jeffords, says Davis returned the ring once she knew who the owner was and never wore it.
