ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's state Senate is getting closer to creating internal rules capping the gifts that lobbyists can give senators.
It appears less likely, however, that state lawmakers will agree to put those rules in a new law binding both chambers of the General Assembly.
A special Senate committee discussed Wednesday some of the intricacies of those proposed rules. In general, supporters have discussed setting a $100 cap on the gifts that lobbyists can give lawmakers. The panel chairman, Sen. John Crosby, says the committee intended to make clear that no gift could exceed the $100 limit, no matter how many lobbyists contribute toward it.
The Senate is expected to vote on those rules when its members reconvene Monday.
If enacted, senators who violate the rules could be fined or expelled.
