Discovery of human ashes poses mystery for sheriff

NewsCentral Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Authorities are searching for the owners of two boxes of human ashes found at a rental property near Savannah.

A resident found the boxes -- buried about 10 inches deep -- while digging for worms in the backyard.

Effingham County sheriff's officials are now trying to identify and locate family members of the deceased.

Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor tells the Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/YTPGIa) that investigators believe one box contains the cremains of an adult and the other is either a child or small adult.

They are working with the coroner and local funeral homes and looking through property records in an attempt to solve the mystery.

One clue -- one of the boxes has a partial label with a date of October, possibly after the year 2000.
